Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

i am really afraid that, ultimately, you are right about critics
nowadays :>(
The economics and politics are now more powerful than the musicians,
even though the actual musicians themselves do not play to please
the critics.

But the poor musicians are caught and ultimately are the ones who
suffer because of the damned powerbrokers who control them!!!

you have so accurately and sadly described the difference between
yesteryear and now! i saw my thoughts written out before me by your
hand. Besides the politics and economics, now technology is the king...
and controls what we hear. Recordings are very frustrating now, 'cause
what you hear is NOT what is played; it's what is superimposed.
it is so sad....

and no, i don't understand it. But furthermore, MANY of those critics
are NOT failed musicians. They were never musicians in the first place.
If you actually tried to talk music with them, they would not understand.

I am so happy to hear you say that about the Adagietto!!!!!!
It only comes to life when done in that way!!!! it is so powerful
and moving in its simplicity, and its voice only comes out in that way.

BTW: the quote i give re. Mengelberg was to point out what the critic
had to say about the Berlioz! and 50+ years after it was written no less!
His saying that even Mengelberg couldn't save it! after i shake my
head, i just laugh at the critics!

This is why i am so happy i got a decent turntable and how i cherish
searching for the long forgotten LPs! No artifice, no dial twiddling,
what you hear is what you get. Even when the sound is muddied, you have
a much truer picture of what the orchestra was trying to do...how the
people interacted, blended, highlighted what they were doing. You hear
more realistically their intent...their true interpretation.

This is why when I heard the vanB/CO Das Lied i was so moved. The sound
really came through...you could hear the hall...you could hear the
musicians interacting...you could hear what they were trying to do...
and the true sound they were trying for...the glorious glorious woodwinds!
no false warmth or accenting of certain instruments or groups.
I've begun to listen to the Brahms #1 and #3...and they are just as
glorious!!!!

With the modern recording techniques, i really wonder if we could ever
get this now...I am afraid all that true beauty would be lost on the
studio floor :<(
