My take on the AMG(the on-line edition) is that it's a reference book on biographies, dates(which are incorrect a lot of times) and discographies useful for an experienced fan, but it can lead a novice astray. As far as it's merits as a review publication, they aren't many. Most of the records get 4 or 4 1/2 stars, some without any explanation why.
If you would like an example -
Kenny G -Duotones and Holiday albums get 4 1/2 stars out of 5!!!
Steve Lacy - Sands and Rushes records get only 2 stars...
Which one is THE soprano saxophonist here?
Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard Again - 2 1/2 stars.
Coltrane - Body and Soul - 1 1/2 stars(???), supposedly because of the poor recording quality.
Nevertheless, I admit to using the AMG, albeit with a grain of salt, because of its convinience and because of the more encyclopedic nature than the Penguin, which I also have and which reads more like an entertainment publication. More indespensable information came from my friend Erik and from people at the BN Conference than from ANY Jazz guide.
