Hi Brian,
i'm glad to hear someone else mention his name!
He was a special pianist, and his Brahms comes
across as one of his great loves! You may have these already, but... just in case...
both on cd:
Brahms #2 with Hamilton Harty/Halle Orch ('31)
and
Tchai #1 with Issay Dobroven/Philharmonia O ('47)
on The Piano Library # PL 263-------
Brahms #1 with Kubelik/Philharmonia O ('55)
and
Brahms Var & Fugue on theme by Handel ('42)
on Testament SBY 1041His playing of the 4th mvt of #2, the Allegretto grazioso
is the ONLY version i've heard to match Horowitz' version
where they both gather up those devlish octaves and make
the theme lilt like it should.Solomon had a special way with slow movements and had infinite
shades of soft. His crescendi/descrescendi were executed as if
he were singing rather than playing.
His Adagio from Brahms #1 is absolutely sublime!i could go on and on about him!
regards,
Bill
