Re: How to file classical?

First, I have LPs and CDs, which are stored separately.

I usually file them by Composer, and put them by symphony (or orchestral), concertos, chamber, and keyboard, but that doesn't work for all composers.

If I think of the LP or CD because of the artist, I will file it under the artist's name, i.e., Horowitz, particularly for compilations. However, some of Horowitz LPs or CDs will go under the composer, such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, or Schumann. I don't separate the composers from the artists.

Opera is another category, by composer, kept separately.

Then, there are early music, brass, spoken word, world music, which I keep in little sections all by themselves.

Well, I usually can find what I'm looking for within a minute or so.

However, unless you have a large collection of classical, it should not be that hard to find something with a fairly basic method organization. You just may have to look under more than one category.

There's just no simple classification that will work. Some computerize it, which would be ideal, I guess, or use a card catalogue.
