Roy.............. Don't he work with Junior and Earl down at the ML Jiffy-Lube ? (Although the name "Roy" comes from the noble "Roi", here in the US, Roy is usually associated with more rugged gentlemen.... Roy Rogers, Roy Acuff, Roy Campenella, Roy Jones Jr., Roy Clark, Roy Orbison, etc.)I'm guessing their's some stigma to having that "Roy" name as a classical conductor. He'd probably sell more records if he changed it to Trevor Goodmann or Claus Gutenmahn or maybe shaved his legs and called himself Anna-Sophie VonGoodman.
I thouroughly enjoy my Roy Goodman recordings. They seem to have a vitality lacking in many other recordings. For a raucous good time, try his "Concerto for (Natural) Horn in E" by Weber on Nimbus. I think I'd go out of my way to hear a live performance with ol' Bubba Roy and th' Band!
No offence to any "Roy"'s out there ! If I took up classical conducting for real (I've been a latent "air" conductor for half a century).... and wanted to sell records, I sure wouldn't want my nickname "Johnny" on the album cover ;~} However, if I had a jazz or Big-Band group, I'd probably prefer Johnny or Roy.
