I believe they're both right.
I believe in knowledge and therefore in music schools. There's much more comunication today then in the beginning of the century. That's perhaps why 'They all sound the same'.
But the 'idiosyncratic interpretations of the old conductors' were rather interesting and surely added a lot to the works they conducted.
Once I saw a TV program with some guys from the BPO. They stated that the different aproaches of the several conductors were really interesting, in the performer's point of view.
