AMG (All Music Guide) (www.allmusic.com) has a fairly comprehensive guide to jazz (as well as corresponding volumes for other types of music), with a web site to match. It has basic info on all of the great older players as well as contemporary players, has info on mosy of an artist's releases with reviews, track listings, musician credits, etc. I know it's been helpful to me at times!
The web site also gives info on ordering the book, but I found it at Barnes and Noble too. Its an ideal basic source for someone like yourself. They even give broad general explanations of different styles and eras in jazz.
I don't completely agree with *every* one of their reviews, but they're usually on the money.Enjoy!
