I get the feeling most of us are doing something similar, with a few "odd" ideas (ie different to what I do, how's that for solipsism?) like filing by record label.I basically have 2 systems - composer and collections. I define a collection as a disc by one artist which includes works by a number of different composers and which I bought because of the artist/s. I file those by artist so Earl Wild playing your 20 favourite piano composers would get filed alphabetically under "Wild".
The rest I file alphabetically by composer. It's easy when it's a disc that's all Beethoven or all Mozart but gets to be a pain when it has works by both Beethoven and Mozart. Here I stop and take a think - do I want to file it under the artist or under a composer? If I choose to file by composer, I pick which one I really want the disc for and file under that name.
Within composer you have a couple of options. You can file by alphabetical order of title of work (if there's more than 1 work by the composer, I choose the one I'm most interested in) or you can file by type of work as Rob suggests - opera, orchestral, instrumental, vocal, whatever. Just pick something that makes sense to you. I tend to use a combination of alpha order of composition and type of work, and it varies a bit depending on composer. Occasionally I do something else - for some reason I file John Adams' works in order of release which is something I usually do with artists. Perhaps that's because he often conducts anyway and he's a living composer and I occasionally think of them in a similar way to how I think of artists I like like Van Morrison or Jerry Jeff Walker who I file in order of release.
I keep classical separate from pop from jazz from world music. My wife doesn't agree with a lot of what I file under classical (ie contemporary composers) but that's not a major issue.
What matters is that you have a system and you understand it, and you can find what you want when you want it, apart from those times when you've had 5 or 6 things out and have stuffed up putting them back and then you have to figure out where you misfiled the damn thing :-(
The system is always perfect and I'm rarely that.
