It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Some chauvinism, "As usual," you'd say...

Gramofono 2000, an Italian company, it's usual a foreign company who gives the credits to Willem Mengelberg he deserves, since the Dutch don't like music, but this AB 78637.39 3CD box gives you a 'A portrait (1926-1941)' and it will give you:

CD 1
Beethoven 3
Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York, January 1930

All other recordings, which aren't Victor but Columbia are with the Concertgebouworkest, where the earlier ones are short pieces, guess lacking the technology to successfully record a complete symphony, but later on larger pieces could be recorded and there are some recordings which sources aren't mentioned like the famous recording of Liszt, but is a longer piece.

Perhaps Telefunken and Philips arrived at the scene?

Wagner, Tannhauser Ouverture, May 1926

CD 2
Beethoven, Ouverture Leonore III, May 1930
Von Weber, Ouverture 'Der Freischutz', June 1931
Wagner, Ouverture 'Lohengrin', prelude to Act 1, June 1927
Liszt, 'Les Preludes', June 1929
Brahms, Academic Festival Ouverture, May 1930
Tchaikovsky, Ouverture 1812, April 1949

CD 3

Tchaikovsky 6, April 1941
Von Weber, Ouverture 'Oberon', May 1928
Beethoven, Ouverture 'Egmont', June 1931
Bach, Overture from Orchestral Suite No. 2, June 1931

Most recordings are pretty good for their age, but since this combines more music as conducted by Mengelberg, you will get an overview of a totally forgotten playing style, which I wouldn't describe as overly romantic, but creating effects. For instance the Ouverture 'Lohengrin' is laden with sentimental drivel in the form of portamento, something he often used when the music asked for it, so Beethoven is pretty cool in this sense, but powerful and masculine while of course Tchaikovsky 6, well, fill it in yourself:-)

Nice overview of a great artist and a necessity to judge the more modern recordings or just a source to hear what tone and colour can do within an orchestra. To me it's musicmaking where the music is immediately transported to the soul, if I have one, not believing in Cartesian theatre:-)
