All things considered, his set of the Ring is still the best buy on CD, and his other recordings of Wagner's operas were at least credible if not the "best" compared to the competition. From the record company's point of view, that might make him the "greatest". I'm not sure who made the most Wagner recordings in the stereo era, Solti or Karajan, but I'll take the former over the latter almost all of the time. Which of these and the other conductors mentioned are the "greatest" is not a question that can be answered. Are oranges or lemons best? While Toscanini, Furtwangler, and Kna were truly "great" conductors, their recordings interest me little for a variety of reasons. Hope it's raining somewhere with a good fire in the fireplace, because that's about all this question is good for.
