For musical works I really care about, I want to hear many different performances. In general I prefer a great performance, even if the sound is mediocre, to a merely very good performance with state of the art sound. But the worse the sound is, the less of the greatness of the performance comes through, and at some point I say something like, "OK I can tell that this is a great performance, but the sound is so primitive that I cant enjoy it as much as some other recordings that I admire less." I can listen to Schnabel, Casals, Furtwangler, and Toscanini recordings made in the 30s, but I would certainly not want those to be the only recordings of Beethoven, Wagner, Bruckner, or Brahms that I hear. The Schnabel recording of Beethoven op. 111 is the best there is and I go to it often as a reminder of what the essence of the work is. But on a given day when I want to enjoy listening to op 111, I am probably more likely to go to Arrau or Goode. I need to approach Beethoven from many different angles. As great as Schnabel is, there are some aspects of Beethoven that are not in the recordings simply because of the limitation of the technology. Some lesser performances do not suffer this disadvantage, and can offer something that Schnabel's recordings cannot, even while they offer less of some aspects of Beethoven than Schnable is able to convey in spite of the limitations. So lets listen to a lot of recordings and get what we can from them. Dont negect the great ones of the past just because of the primitive sound quality.
