Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Bob,

There has been some extremely deep conversation today in the lane about music and perception. However, your topic and insights would impress both Gerald Edelman and Edmund Husserl. Certainly, scholars have debated the perceived emotional appeal in music for eons, but there is something to be inferred or intuited on the musical capture of the emotions. For me both professionally and personally, this issue is something I am involved with on a day to day basis. Specifically the question, "Can music heal ?" I am not merely refering to the above statement as one of emotional healing, but also of physical healing (consider psychoimmunology and/or music therapy). This topic has lead me to recommend the following text:

"Emotion and Meaning in Music" (author-Leonard Meyer, professor of musicology) which is a book that I have read many years ago and has continued influence on my thoughts/directions. The writing details a phenomenological examination (the author's own ideas with many references to other acclaimed scholars) of the relationship between physical sounds (in this case music) and its finality (both perceptual and emotive) on the indivdual receiver. This text is not "new age" or "self help" and is considered reference material in its academic setting. I would not recommend this text/author, if I did not feel strongly about its merit. I make these statements mainly because of the deep impact that this topic has made on me. IMO, there is much more to be learned as these issues are now gaining critical analysis. Thank you for these insights that you have generated and enjoy the music!!

Regards :-)
