Did I say I prefer modern sound and lousy performances? I don't think so. Did I say I prefer Solti over Mengelberg? Nope. But I do think Beethoven would rather listen to Kleiber-1974 over Furtwaengler-1929 while sitting in John's eZLift.I said that given excellent performances, more weight should go to modern recordings than is common. And for musical reasons, not audiophile reasons. I happen to love the crummy sounding but marvelously sung Isolde of Kirsten Flagstad in the thirties. Is that what Wagner would have ideally liked? How about Kleiber's modern set? Isn't that an excellent performance with excellent acoustics? That's a tougher choice. It just seems that the Lane here is overgrown with adulation of old performances. Are all the conductors and singers of the last half century so bad?
