I agree with Patrick. I think the brain can "fill in" a lot of the sound with minimal suggestion from the recording. I've always thought that is one reason why most musicians I have know did not pay the slightest attention to their audio equipment. They listened to the performance, not the sound. The more live music you hear, the more you can do this.
