I don't know what it is either, I discovered Van Beinum not so very long ago and under his conducting I've never heard a mistake in the orchestra, never a wrong note, always focussing how to create beautiful sound. In this recording the horns and Wagnertubas are just great in the tone they produce and the way they mingle with trombones is quite astonishing, totally together and one with the orchestra and I've been listening to it yesterday lots of times, comparing it with other performances and as you said woodwinds are great, the first oboeist is a killer ( Haakon Stotijn), but I also remember that desolate flute in the third movement, but most memorable to me are especially the total of strings, the aggression followed by whining and crying in just a couple of seconds, the physical support by the celli and the nice deep double basses make this to me respected interpretation, and equally respected as Celi's interpretation, but this recording is more enjoyable because of the orchestra. I always liked the aggression of Jochum, and although he's still one of my favourite Bruckner conductors, it's not as good as this one.

Still very curious about Furtie, because I expect a very passionate and fast account with perhaps a little worser orchestra. ( I never said this before about the Berliners.....)
