It seems to me that Naxos recordings improved greatly from 1993 onwards, a bit earlier in British BBC recording venues. I have a few recent Naxos recordings from Russian venues, and they are not as good--neither are the orchestras. For recordings made before 1993, the sound quality is more variable, and I suggest checking out the reviews (the Naxos catalogue kindly shows the recordings that received high ratings).
For early Naxos, chamber good, orchestral bad, as mentioned below, is a fairly reasonable rule, but check the reviews. However, a number of the more recent recordings of orchestral music are very good, such as the Berlioz Overtures. and the performances are generally quite good, sometimes excellent, as with the Bruckner Symphonies and apparently, the Vaughan Williams Symphonies, though I haven't heard those yet.
Favorite Naxos?
Bruckner, Symphonies 4, 5, 6, and 7, with Georg Tintner.
Haydn Symphonies 23, 24, and 61 are beautifully played and recorded.
Haydn Quartets, Op. 33 and 76, with the Kodaly Qt.
Smetana, Ma Vlast with Antoni Wit, a fine conductor. Great sound.
Dvorak Quartets with the superb Vlach Qt. of Prague. I have several of these and they are excellent.
Schumann, Symphonies, with Antoni Wit. The orchestral ensemble has been criticized, though I think it is pretty good, but the orchestra plays with great spirit.
Kraus, Symphonies vols. 1 & 2. If you like good 18th century symphonies, these are well done and well recorded.
Vanhal, Symphonies vol. 1, more 18th century symphonies. Another excellent disc.
Italian Oboe Concertos. Very pleasant disc.
