often seems to get totally titillated by anything precocious or naughty. Any young composer assuming to know how to fully justify the use of a Mahler-size orchestra, or to employ a defamed whore as subject matter for a full-length opera -- in my opinion -- isn't aiming for genuine respect as a composer. It looks to me like he's just trying to make a buck, and will not prove to be of lasting value. That's not to say that his music cannot, or should not, be enjoyed by people. But, man, if I had the artistic and technical skills to write music of that scale, I'd sure aim a little higher. So, the answer to your last question is "Yes, he is too far out there for the traditionalist" -- or anyone else that believes in serious art.
