Re: Joni's New Jazz Album

In the liner notes Larry Klein says Joni was trying to trace the arc of a love affair, from the first track, "You're My Thrill", through "You've Changed", on to "Stormy Weather", and ending with "Both Sides Now", an admission that, as bad as it was, she'll be revisiting the journey again.

Musically, it looks very promising with Herbie and Wayne Shorter on board, but most often they are a light spice with a 70 piece orchestra providing most of the meal. Stylistically then this is closer to a classic early century pop recording than a jazz outing.

Joni sounds a bit too somber for the opening "You're My Thrill" would seem to call for. Later on her voice and the tone of tunes match up better, but the first time through the album the opening tracks may seem a bit off. Because of this, Robin, my wife, thinks Joni missed it with this one. I disagree as I see the album, not as a pictorial of her first love affair, but her last. So "You're My Thrill" is not from the perspective of a 20 year old, but from that of an almost middle-aged Joni, and the story starts there and moves to her recent breakup with Larry Klein. I give it a solid B, but it does stop short of being essential Joni.

The recording is pretty good (HDCD), but keep in mind that Joni's voice is not what it used to be and the recording makes me think that the Herbie Hancock album had a bit of sweetening for her.

The packaging is cool, but also useless for storage. The litographs (there are 4) are really just cards. Unless you're a Joni freak like I am, I'd wait for the stnadard release and put the extra money into the recent Blue vinyl release.
