Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Well, I just finished listening to the calming and cool tones of Sheila Jordon (why isn't she more famous?) followed by a dream team recording with Thelonious Monk, John Coltraine, Art Blakey, Coleman Hawkins. Ray Copeland et all (does it get any better?). I was feeling mellow and chillin' to the cool vibe.

So, it was quite a shock to read a post from what seems to be a Rod made angry. possibly in part by some of my own inane ramblongs. I feel saddened and shamed at the same time. Rod, you are a very cool dude and I am truly sorry if you got mad over this. "Gestapo tactics", is pretty strong language and I take it to indicate the strength of your feelings on this issue.

As somewhat of a Joey-come-lately I can see both sides. The lane can seem like a bit of an "old boys club" at times and I mostly didn't visit for my first couple of months in the asylum. But, over time I visited more often and found it an intersting and, on the whole. welcoming place to hang out, discuss music and indulge in somewhat off-colour humor (but all done in the best possible taste, of course). I must say that this is the only place I've ever felt like discussing Music with other people online. I used to discuss music passionatley and in great depth with my closest friends, but I left most of them back in the UK. So the Lane kind of fills that gap for me and I'm very thankful for its existance.

I think even the most die-hard classical nuts here genuinely welcome all comers, as I have been made to feel welcome, But. I also think that there is something fragile and precious that could be easily destroyed. Maybe we get over-protective of our neighbourhood at times, but I try to keep an open mind musically and in most other things. I probably have more to offer in non-classical discussions anyway, so I certainly don't want to exclude anyone wishing to discuss the music that I grew up with and that I still appreciate.

The objections, as I see it, are mainly to the recent rash of "survey posts" (e.g. 'who's the best ...."). Now, I don't object to these per se and have joined in a couple of them, but I can see where they can get tiresome after a while. Those threads don't seem to spark much discussion or impart much information. So I can agree with those who would prefer not to see too many of these threads.

But, I agree we should be above childish ragging of other Forums and I feel shamed that I indulged in some of that myself, recently. I will try not to let it happen again.

However, there has to be some numor and some give and take. Not everyone is going to "get it" and unfortunately there are always people who will take things the wrong way. Either because they lack humor, take themselves too seriously, because it suits their own agenda to do so, or because they are not all that smart.

I, for one, do not wish to have to carry the burden of someone else's misconceptions. I can only be myself and act how I see fit. I cannot carry the burden of looking out for those who either have no sense of humor, are in possession of closed minds, or who are unable, or simply refuse, to use the brain that they were born with. But those who have open minds , love music and love discussing it openly and intellegently and, sometimes passionately, I will gladly welcome with open arms and would hope to eventually count them among my friends, or, at least make them feel as welcome as I have been made to feel.

With your help and tending. I'm sure the Lane can remain a friendly and unique refuge on the internet. Please stay with us. Rod and show us the way. The last thing I ever expected. or wanted, to see was a mad Rod M and I am truly sorry for contributing to your displeasure.

-Joe.
