I'd say , start with a good Jazz book first. "Jazz - an American Classical Music" is easy enough read, memorable and inexpensive.
From yours "Start with Art Blakey" phrase I'd advise David Rosenthal's "Hard Bop" book(good luck finding it), which focuses on that particular period in Jazz, if understand your phrase correctly. If I do, then why not get the Jazz Messengers albums first?
Anyway,Milt Jackson & John Coltrane: Bags and Trane
Wes Montgomery: Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery
Kenny Dorham:Round About Midnight at Cafe Bohemia
Howard McGhee:Dusty Blue
Lee Morgan:Introducing
Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins
Sonny Rollins:Saxophone Colossus
Sonny Rollins:Plays for Bird
Paul Chambers:Whims of Chambers
Art Blakey with the Jazz Messengers:A night at BirdlandThese should cover some of the instrumental players of Hard Bop. Take it from there on.
