Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Call me crazed, loco or whatever.....

But I'm really starting to like Tchaikovsky's 5th and 6th symphony, no flames please, I'm dead-serious......Yesterday I've been listening to various versions on various audio-formats and although I liked the 5th Ormandy recorded for Delos with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and although I liked the 6th Mengelberg recorded with the Concertgebouworkest, Mravinsky remained the winner, closely followed by a very bad Italian pressing of Furtwangler's recording with the Berliners and after that I gave Gergiev another spin and was overwhelmed with the power, the great understanding for the music, stressing the musical lines instead of the sentimentality or fiery Russianism. When comparing the orchestras I also thought the Wieners were in this live-recording still the most coherent and resembled the sound of Gergiev's own Kirov Orchestra only a little bit more beautiful, ergo 'European' in the woodwinds, strings and brass.

It makes me really think about, after already having 1812 and 'The Nutcracker', greatly performed but impossible to dance in this fast version of Gergiev, I should check out Tchaikovsky's opera 'Pique Dame' as well with the Kirov under Gergiev.

Christ, what's happening with me? Please beat me with a stick, send Jasmine over to my cottage to torture me while listening to Argerich slamming the shit out the piano in the Tchaikovsky pianoconcerto, unable to hear it because of my screaming.....

Help me, I'm desperate, but I really start to like Tchaikovsky......

Sincerely,

Rob
