Some good music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period

38.27.23.87

I found some good ensemble music for voice and period instruments. I love this Genre's minimalist and child like simplicity. You can really here the early stirrings of the folk tradition. Anyway here are a few titles.

1)Naxos "Under The Greenwood Tree" Excellent sound quality and good performances of some classic Medeival songs and some not so well known works. Price $8.99. Gotta love Naxos.

2)Centaur Records: Two titles by The Musica Da Camera "The Cross Of Red" and "Natus Est" Very thought provoking and most enjoyable. Sound quality is very good with lots of ambience.

3)London: The Early Music Consort of London performs "Music of the Crusades" Great and unique performances with much the same repetoire as Musica Da Camera but its neat to hear the different interpretations. Sound quality not quite as good as the others but still very good.

I like this music much better than the A Capella works of this same period which tend to sedate me.

This music is both informal in its invocation of street performers and the peasant class and elegant in its purity of heart. The period instruments transport you to another time.

If you like The Baltimore Consort and want to take it a step further check out the above titles. Centaur can be contacted directed to avoid a long wait at Centaurrecords.com.
