One shining exception was the Grand Funk Railroad reunion tour [Note: The live album "Bosnia" came out of this three year reformation.] Those guys hadn't lost a thing (i.e. passion, energy, vocals, technique, studio/live tightness & musicality --- you'ld have thought that the twenty years since the three of them last performed live together had vanished altogether!).Nevertheless, I've become more wary of reunion concerts (i.e. the let's-make-a-quick-buck, beat the dead horse, and make off like bandits type of tours). [Note: I'm still smarting from the sad disappointment of seeing the reformed Bad Company last year.]
BTW, while I'm thinking about it, here's another infamously bad concert I attended, and almost (mercifully) forgot about: Emerson, Lake, and Powell. This one shot tour promoted by a well known soft drink company had more advertising crap associated with it than any concert I've ever seen before or since. It was truly disgusting! After the openning act, there was this 10 or 15 minute soft drink promo-film which aired over a large screen in the center of the stadium (i.e. to the growing frustration of the audience I might add), followed by a very LONG equipment check (i.e. which didn't prevent equipment failures during the show, I might add), and a horribly mediocre performance by Emerson, Lake, and Powell. [Note: It was apparent that Powell's technique didn't match Emerson's or Lakes at all, at least in a concert setting!] My conclusion was that this was a total waste of my time and money, not to mention leaving me with the impression that Emerson and Lake had completely sold out. No offense to the memory of Cozy Powell, but my only consolation was the realization that Carl Palmer had the wisdom to avoid this tangled up corporate mess.
