Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Timbo …

… an interesting musicological read on the subject: How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care) by Ross W. Duffin.

I don't have anything approaching perfect pitch, but I am very (perhaps "overly" is more accurate) sensitized to the far sharp major third interval forced on us by the equal system. I have less difficulty with other intervals, but I hear/feel those dissonances, too.

The Duffin book ranges across various temperament systems that were in vogue from the Middle Ages onward. It includes a good amount of historical information along the way. My favorite neat-o fact was learning about the simultaneous usage of several systems among musicians at any given point in history, some favoring one system, some another.
