It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Blizzards sans Music, sans tarmac, in late Spring

It is my view that blizzards are one of Hughey's (god's) ways of reminding you how good it is to be here, and that it's conditional and special, all at the same time.

I was once a cross-country or lang-loff skier, through the army here, on thee Snowy Mountains, which I live just to the North of us. So I have skied through a few blizzards and made a few snow shelters/caves.

MY very first blizzard came earlier than that. One memorable weekend, my 23rd birthday in the 1970s, 25 November. At the very end of Spring down here, we drove up into Australia's Snowy Mountains National Park to meet a Ranger who was keen to have us help out with culling feral pigs ~= to large wild boar, in the park.

Long before we got up onto the first part of the huge plateau that is the Snowys, it began to snow. Sago sized snow - pellets.

We were in a canvas topped Land Rover, and it got very cold, very quickly IYTMMeaning.

We then got into a blizzard, and both wiper motors quickly burned out.

The ranger and his early Toyota Land Cruiser took the lead and we used our warmish water bottles to clear the screen.

The entire plateau had gone white, excepting the blackberries on each low ridge, and then suddenly there was a huge mob of feral pigs, against all that white. Difficult to get the range, and very glarey through a scope.

IIRC I have written about the shooting that then ensued here at AA. Feral pigs are immensely destructive of all Aussie ecologies, but most so of our Alpine systems. And, they taste good!!!

But the overwhelmingly memorable effect of that event was the sheer beauty and power of nature, out of season. We were all very lucky to get home.

The deep banks of snow were gone within days. It was one of my most memorable birthdays.
