From ARSClist: New Mercury reissue box set

Universal's Asia division has released 50 of the CD's in a box set with neato LP-like slip covers. Here is an eBay reseller example with good photos and descriptive text:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-Living-Presence-Box-Collectors-Limited-Edition-50CD-SEALED-/320774928217

I have seen the set available for fewer US dollars from HMV Hong Kong. It seems to be available only in Hong Kong and Korea. I studied the photos from this eBay auction carefully and this appears to be a re-packaging of fewer than half of the original CD reissues, so I assume they are using bit-perfect copies or original manufacturing parts from the CD's. If that's the case, these are real-deal 3-2 mixes from the original producer. Manufacturing appears to be in Germany. I wonder if they plan a second box set covering the rest of the original CD contents.

Many of these titles have been out of print except as iTunes/Amazon downloads or as CDR media from ArkivMusic for quite some time now. There is some overlap with the multi-CD sets that Universal put out in the early 2000's (most or all of these are now out of print too). I consider this new 51-CD box set a third repackaging of the original CD titles (1=original issues 1990-1999; 2=the multi-CD themed sets, discount priced (same content on the discs, from the same glass masters, but less booklet text and photos and multi-CD packaging), that Universal put out early this century, and 3=this new box set).

In the interest of fairness to collectors, I will also mention that Sony BMG issued a box of the CD layers of the RCA Living Stereo SACD remasters:

This, by the way, is also a good way to get a listing of the SACD reissues, I think this is a complete set of titles.

I think, in both the Universal and Sony/BMG cases, the box sets are limited print runs and they are sold to retailers with a no-returns policy.
