Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Saturday night I conducted the Wiener Philharmoniker!

The Haus der Musik in Vienna (http://www.hausdermusik.at/en) is an interactive museum devoted to sound and music with special emphasis on the (non minor) role played by Vienna in the making of music history.

An enticing interactive feature is what is essentially a Wee(R) workstation where you stand in front of a huge screen with a baton in your hand. You can select on a touch screen in the form of a music-stand what you want to conduct (I did select the Eine Kleine Nachtmusik), so that the score is displayed.

Then no less than Zubin Mehta appears on the screen to give you some basic tips on the art of conducting; finally you are left alone right in form of the Wiener, who have appeared on the screen in the meantime.

The experience is quite realistic as the orchestra reacts immediately to any slowing down or speeding up. That was just an abridged selection of the 1st movement (no repeats, so not an historically-informed perfomance on my side), but I must admit that I was all perspiration when leaving the podium and grabbing my coat, after my wife had immortalized my unique performance.
