G. B. Shaw and Beethoven

The Wagner lover felt Beethoven had to much "Rum Tum". The dislike of Beethoven seems due to the feeling that he was overly aggressive in comparison to his classical predecessors. It's interesting to contemplate that there was no straight line in classical / romantic development in the late 19C. I wonder if one could feel that Brahms fixed deficiencies in the Beethoven model, for example?

Berlioz is a great read, he is in debt to Weber as much as Beethoven. Opera orchestral theatrics in general needs to be examined in classical symphonic development.
