It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

A most sublime performance. What really sets this one apart,,,

is Yuja Wang's use of dynamic shading and tonal color as the primary device of expression rather than excessive bending and stretching of tempos and phrasing that are the common devices in the more popular "romantic interpretations." Many of the more "classical" interpretations including Rachmaninoff's own recordings are often found to be cold and sterile in comparison with the more romantic ones. This is where Yuja leaves those interpretations in the dust. This is a very thoughful sophisticated interpreation on her part. She has taken her exceptional technical skills and used them as a true artist. The second movement of the 2nd piano concerto is IMO a revelation in interpretation that could only be realized by someone with her skills. Bt comparison every other recording I used as a reference for this movement is burdened with uninvolving straight forward interpretations that lead the listener to drift or overly melodramatic interpretations with quasi Bill Shatneresque phrasing. In fact what she does so brilliantly is avoid such vulgar use of phrasing throughout the recording. This allows the melodies to come through with all their beauty in tact.

Much of this is not so plainly obvious on first listen. I spent a lot of time comparing this one to the long list of most highly regarded recordings of these pieces. This ultimately makes the "romantic' interpretations look vulgar and self indulgent most (not all) of the time and leave the more classical interpreations looking rough around the edges, less involving, sublime and just plain beautiful.

Highly recomended if one is willing to give it the time it deserves.
