Balliett was the jazz critic for New Yorker magazine for about 40 years,
and he published nearly 20 different books about jazz during that time
frame. I have been re-reading one in particular, "Goodbyes and Other
Messages, a Journal of Jazz 1981-1990" and thoroughly enjoying. He is
familiar and conversant with jazz musicians or all eras and styles, and
his writing is an absolute joy to read. Readers have said that his
description of a particular musician's sound enables them to hear how
that musician plays, even never having actually heard that musician play.
High praise indeed.
If you are a fan of jazz, and have not read Balliett's work, I urge you
to do so. It will be time well spent. I have linked an interview he
gave which I very much enjoyed reading. You might also.
