Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Attention Mr Goulding!!

Twice a month a few of us get together at my place to listen to new jazz cd's, including jazz vocalists, one of the cd that a friend brought is the new one by Rebecca Martin which in case you do not know is the wife of the bass player Larry Grenadier of the Brad Meldhau trio fame.
The albulm consist of standards and the instrumention is simple, basically just voice, bass and sax. But what struck me at first was the audio, it is very unusual to say the least, Mrs Martin
voice comes from the left channel, the bass in the center and the sax on the right, a little like an early stereo recording, it sounds just so different to what we are use to these days. In a way it is like sitting on the front row of a small venue and having the musicians placed where your loudspeakers are which is actually very realistic.
Both voice, bass and sax are extremely well recorded, the bass is big and fat but this is Larry's sound a little like Charlie Haden.
Forget about sound stage and depth ect, the musicians are just a few feet away from you.
That would be a good cd to use for a demo. We all know how good Larry Grenadier is but his wife Rebecca had a very nice unusual voice and
her singing is honest with no pretence. The sax breaks the monotony of just bass and voice. Most enjoyable.
