IMHO, Joe was one of the GREAT jazz drummers.

I read his bio at his website a few months ago, and learned that he was originally a violist - and apparently quite accomplished, reportedly playing the Mendelssohn concerto with the Boston Symphony. Upon meeting Jascha Heifetz he apparently concluded he could never match Heifetz's sound and took up the drums. And the rest, as they say, is history.
