I heard Louis Lorti play Liszt's Années de Pèlerinage at Tully last night... all three volumes in one evening. Almost three hours of hugely dramatic, extremely difficult, over-the-top piano compositions, beautifully played in one evening. It was wonderful and exhausting. Each volume, including the somewhat introspective third volume, is a tour de force. To have them all played in one evening, and played well, is, as Alan Walker said in a talk with the pianist after the concert, a monumental achievement. He put the untitled third volume in the middle, and finished up with the breathtaking second "Italian" volume. They had copies of his recording of the piece on Chandos available. After I recover for a couple of days I'll listen to it.
