You've read the book, now listen to the man speak, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra play ...
Alex Ross has curated two shows for the ACO currently touring Oz.
I'm no great lover of stringed music - at least of the violin family - but I may convert after last night's talk & recital at Melbourne Town Hall.
First is based around the chaconne through several centuries.
The second runs through Takemitsu: Nostalghia, Britten: Variations on a theme by Frank Bridge, Stravinsky: Apotheosis, from Apollo, Webern: Five Movements Op. 5, Xenakis: Voile, Strauss: Metamorphosen. This I saw, and it was superb. I've never heard the Stravinsky so crystalline or the Webern so spellbinding.
Any who can see it should do so (check ACO website). And they're doing a broadcast on ABC Classic FM 19 March 1300 hours Eastern Summer Time for those who can't.
If those across the water are really lucky, it may tour.
