Re: Hatto in The Globe -- more light shed

"The secret may have held for as long as it did because Hatto's CDs featured works that, in many cases, had been recorded hundreds of times by a range of artists. And instead of taking famous versions by pianists with distinctive, personal styles -- Glenn Gould, for example -- Barrington-Coupe used little-known recordings by less-traveled musicians

That has yet to be fully determined. He did pirate some very big names, most notably Ashkenazy and the VPO.

The reason why he didn't use Gould or recordings of other piano legends is pretty clear: audio quality. The recordings were supposed to be recently made, so they had to sound that way. I also imagine that B-C had enough self-control not to try and pass Gould off as his wife.
