Add in some odd camera work like extreme close ups, done one presumes for small screens but now out of place with larger displays, or over dark pictures caused by poor lighting, and you have even more opportunities of producing unappealing material.BUT, given a look live performance with good artistry, a DVD production seen on a big screen with a good sound system can be rivetting. The Netrebco "Traviata" (which I posted about recently) comes to mind here. And Surround sound really adds to the atmosphere and the enjoyment of the performance.
Previously I had maintained the opera demands DVD but I'm less dogmatic now and am collecting quite a few on CD and SACD. Yes, DVDs offer the best format but audio only remains worthwhile and is most enjoyable, especially if one is familiar with the work.
