Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

So what sucked you into enjoying Opera?

Is looking and/or listening to a whole opera the best first up introduction to opera? Maybe for some, but I doubt if it is for most people and this could account for the dislike many have for the genre. Choose to look/listen to some of them "cold" (meaning totally unfamiliar with the music) and it is easy to decide -

* stupid plot/story
* maybe a tune or two ok but far too long and ultimately boring
* screechy sopranos waffling on are more than can be borne
* egg head music, not for me

BUT, listen to some of the more appealing music from some operas, become familiar with it, get to like it and then be curious to explore further -> ultimately familiar with and enjoy the whole opera. IMO it is a big ask for someone to immediately fall in love with opera if they are completely unfamiliar with it -> sort of reaction held by the inmates who posted so negatively below.

As a youngster I became familiar with the music of "La Traviata" via a 78 rpm recording done by Andre Kostellanetz and his orchestra. This music became very familiar and ultimately led to appreciation of the whole opera and others beyond.

So, you music lovers who are not professional musicians, what inspired your love of opera?

John

Do not criticise the idiots in this world - we need them as they make the rest of us look so much better :-)
