Highlights might be great in their own right but don't necessarily lead to any appreciation of opera as such. Disembodied arias, choruses, etc., are just choral works.To appreciate opera a such I convinced you have to get more than just the music. It is complete, coherent, multimedia presentation that the relies also on plot and drama. Only live opera and opera on DVD make sense to me. And yes, I love subtitles and enjoyment of opera grew immensely with they became possible during live performance. Music purists be damned.
Admittedly I'd buy highlights before complete opera music unless I was quite very familiar with the plot, dialogue, and dramatic action for live or multimedia recording.
