Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Interested in trying out Opera?

I disagree with this. If you want to get into opera, either go to one live or get a few DVDs. Highlights from different operas are simply highlights from different operas. It in now way captures the sonic and visual experience of the medium.

Probably the best opera to start with is "Figaro." It does not suffer from any of the opera cliches, the plot is straightforward, subject matter somewhat complex, and the music superb. It's a tour de force from start to finish. Another accessible work is "Carmen." The plot and characters are strong enough that you could take away the music and it would work as a play, the music is superb, and the productions tend to extravagant. Finally, there's "Aida." The plot and characters are a bit cliche, but the music is terrific and visually it's often cinematic.
