There are several ways into this and mostly we recommend trying out a specific work. However another approach is to buy a compilation of some of the highlights from various works.

If anyone is tempted to try the latter approach I can recommend an excellent 2 CD disc set "Opera for Lovers":

MDT price, where I purchased it, is Â£5.53 ex.vat. I tried to see if it was on Amazon but a simple search failed as did a first attempt at MDT (these "search" engines are sometimes frustrating).

The singing is via some of the the best current and past artists and the audio quality is excellent. Some goose bump singing on these CDs :-)
