I came across theses Lp's yesterday and find the performances pretty interesting. After Grumiaux's fleet, airy and elegant playing comes Suk's with Ruzickova on the Harpsichord. The first thing one notices is the Harpsichord--Ruzickova's is a big sound, no fear of the deep bass octaves or a myriad of colorful effects. One would think Stokowski were at the keyboard.Suk's tempi are broad and his gestures dramatic, as one would expect from the time, I believe originally '63 Supraphon performances in Stereo. The violin is extremely forward. The bottom line upon first hearing is that the music still communicates and is often fascinating. Those who have heard it all: have these performances held up in the long run? Thanks.
