I still actually haven't gotten to the second cd yet.I first heard Leonard Cohen on a radio show. It ws Pete Fornitel's (sp?)Mixed Bag show on sunday mornings. It was a folk based show, whereas on saturdays Fornitel would have his other great show, "saturday morning sixties".
I don't know if you know of the shows he did on WNEW-fm. Those were the days when New York radio was great. It was Lou Reed who said "I heard it on the New York radio".
Anyway, I think the show I heard was a highlight of the best of the shows. I know I taped it on cassette and I might still have the copy.
Cohen sang 'bird on a wire" and I think it was in the studio. His voice was deep and it was a stunning performance. There were a couple of other real stunners by other performers on that particular show.
I can see a little bit of some idiosyncracies in Leonard. His preoccupation with women, but it's a real thing.
But his songs are so good, that I would just be curious to hear all his stuff, all his songs not on this 2 disc set, to see if this man haws any musically weak moments.
Does the man not do anything that doesn't have a sort of musical perfection? The way he blends in backgroud voices is as good as anything I've ever heard. His voice, his topics, his insights, his poetry, the music always compliments, never stands out by itself.
This guy is simply amazing.
