White Nights!!!

62.108.1.72

If I'm correct, being a fan of the man and the orchestra you're dealing with the greatest Furtwanglerian Russian conductor at the moment: Valery Gergiev and his Kirov orchestra which he will never leave and this CD should also contain some other ouvertures and short pieces taken out of operas, lyrically as well as fireworks, like Borodin and Khatchaturian.

It's my favourite 1812 too, if there wouldn't have been a mono recording with Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw, but yes, those cannons on the White Nights are really stunning and it's a great CD to impress guests, because next to being nicely recorded, the Russian interpretation is very Russian played with nice brass, sharp strings and not too beautiful, a little roughly played woodwinds. I hate the piece, but it's great. Did you also hear the Tchai 5 he recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker? Within a few weeks Tchai 6 will also be released and there might be a change I give Mravisnsky an elbow to step aside the stage to let Gergeiv take it. Don't know why, I'm no Tchai-fan, but everytime he does it with these kind of pieces, not making them sentimental, just like his Rach 2 and above all: VERY powerful.

I'm also jealous Jim Willis is going to 'Prince Igor' and I will regret it when Gergiev, or 'The Devil' as the Dutch audience calls him will leave the Rotterdam Philharmonic, because he made it the best Dutch orchestra with only a few minutes rehearsing. (He refuses to conduct the Concertgebouworkest, they're too snobbish to his taste and he's right:-))

Rob, still waiting for a Gergiev recording of 'Le Sacre du Printemps'
