I have had an LP copy of this recording on Everest for seveal years and just this week acquired the Music and Arts version. Your post inspired me to cue them up together and compare the sound. The first thing I noticed verified the note on the cover of the CD, "now refurbished in true mono and on pitch". I could not keep the LP and CD syncronized because the pitch and consequently the speed of the LP was noticeably higher--maybe a quarter-tone. Another note on the cover was also verified: "The original tapes were overloaded and distorted; some distortion remains on this version even after careful reprocessing with state of the art equipment". This suggests to me that the overwhelmingly limiting factor in sound is the original tapes, so other CD versions are not likely to be significantly better. This CD is better than the LP in ways other than the pitch correction. It has been re-equalized so that the tonal balance is warmer. COnsequently, the sound is less shrill and the distorted passages somewhat less obnoxious. Also, the sound is less distant. On the LP it sounds like it is coming from the next room. Another disadvantage of the LP version I have (new ones might be different) is that all 72 minutes are a crammed onto one disc at a low level (12 db lower than the CD) and the slow movement is divided. As far as the distortion on the master is concerned, just about everthing above forte is overloaded, but sometimes the climaxes are so shattering in the musical sense, that the effect is almost, in a perverse sort of way, enhanced by the distortion. I found this to be true especially in the cataclismic climax in the middle of the first movement. I agree with others who have said that the sound quality of this recording, bad though it is, is not a significant barrier to its overpowering effect.
