It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Also a music lover, and an equipment "geek" at times too - there are some times when I just want to thrill to what my amps and speakers are capable of - and screw the music! My daughters were over for the holidays and they're into the techno thumping dance club sound big time. One had bought a CD for the other, and I wanted to hear it on my system. Not really my style, but I had it turned way up loud. I selected my Legacy Focus speakers for (among other things) their accurate bass presentation. They're rated down to 16Hz, and I was interested in how my system would react to something new in its diet. I gotta tell you, it was a groove fest. I was enjoying the balance between the driving bass and the higher electronic squawks and beeps which were coming out clear as a bell rather than shrill The highs were clear and distinct and not buried by the bass and I liked that fact too. My two daughters were wide eyed at the elements of the music that they had never heard before - subtleties, if such a thing exists in such music. (They tried dancing, but my Siberian Husky gets involved and makes dancing impossible) I played them a little bit of Vangelis, because the synth sounds were so similiar to their dance CD, but it lacked the beat for them. I don't even know the name of their CD, but we all had a good time listening to it.

My tastes run more to acoustic bass - The most pleasing sensation that I can get is when I hear a deep standup acoustic bass string snap and thrum against the player's fingers, producing a lifelike and realistic sound so that you feel like that big monster of a bass is right in the room with you. A player like Christian McBride who can reel off a groove so deep and propulsive, or someone like Charlie Haden whose tone is so pure and mellow, and whose timing is so precise while laying down a solid floor for some beautiful and delicate music - these are the guys who really make me appreciate the combination of music, audio, jazz, acoustics - it all becomes worthwhile!

Then when I want to get funky (or as funky as this 49 yr old can get), theres always the inimitable and brilliant electric bass playing of Jaco Pastorious to amaze and thrill me. There's also Victor Wooten who is just as innovative in his way as was Jaco, and who does things on an electric bass that would seem to be impossible. Any time I listen to his "Classical Thump" from the "Show of Hands" CD, I just end up with my mouth hanging open and my head shaking in disbelief. I don't recall what classical composition it is based on, but maybe some of you classical music fans would find it interesting!

Sometimes the sound is every bit as important to listening pleasure as performance, sometimes it is a balance. Sometimes the effect is more visceral, sometimes more intellectual - It's all good! It's what we're here to share. DJ Mo - you just keep on diggin' what you do and sharing it with us here too!
