More Thursday night ramblings

Picked up a few cds today on the way home from the bank (what else is there to do with "cash back":-) and found a couple of gems. The first was Artie Rubenstein doing four Beethoven piano sonatas - "Moonlight", "Pathetique", "Les Adieux" and "Appasionata". It's an RCA Gold Seal recorded in '62 and '63 and released by BMG (09026-61443-2). Performances were terrific and recording was pretty good. Something that keeps surprising me about classical music is how much of it I've already heard in other settings. Until I picked up this cd, I didn't know what the Moonlight sonata was, at least not by name. It took maybe 4 or 5 notes for me to realize I'd heard this a dozen times gracing how many movies score...now I know what it's called. Rob, how does this one compare to Goede? I want more:-)

The second was a curiosity satisfier. I grew up with my dad's Lena Horne albums filling his music shelves, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember any details of her singing. I've been passing up this cd for months, but today I gave in. It's a collection of 17 songs and the recording dates aren't mentioned. The transfer to cd worked pretty well on this one; the sound is natural with all the 'phile goodies - depth, soundstage, tape hiss (just kidding). It's a great recording. As for Lena, well, that's a matter of taste I suppose, but I enjoyed the heck out of her. I'm definitely going to start looking for her vinyl releases at the Salvation Army:-) Both cds will be getting some major air time around this place - reccommend them both.

Sorry I couldn't make it more exciting, the winter blues are setting in and I need some more light treatments. If I can just last till Tuesday, I'll be making an all-day drift boat trip down the Siletz River hunting silver bullets and Life will be good again...
