I don't know if what you're saying is true or typical of newbies, but I found myself in the same boat. My first experience with Bruckner was a big "Huh?" and Mahler took a couple of plays for me to start assimilating it. I still tend to lean toward the drivel side of classical but dark and gloomy is good sometimes too:-)))
