I haven't ever seen the origin of the word ska but as Jeff said it is the beginning of what would later grow into rocksteady, raggae and other forms. Ska is the term describing the Jamaican music mixture popularized in the late 50s that combined local folk music with jazz, African and Carribean rhythms and New Orleans R&B. It is very upbeat music and found its way to Britain via the large West Indian population there. In the mid 60s another form called rocksteady was popular with slower tempo and Motown soul type vocals. Another branch was raggae which carried the slower tempo of rocksteady with a hypnotic, jerky feel and politically and/or socially conscious lyrics (and a healthy dose of island weed to get into the right state of mind).

A number of revivals have occurred as the others posted. If interested in a listen to some new stuff I would recommend the last couple Slackers albums, either 'Redlight' or 'The Question' (my favorite). Both are of a more traditional form with an up front horn section and a fun and upbeat sound without the pop/rock crossover so prevalent in most of the other more commercial offerings.
