I am a classical newbie too (compared to many veterans of this forum). But as more as I listened to classical music on good equipment, I started to enjoy even Mahler.
For example me and my wife were last week at a concert of the 2nd Mahler (Uri Segal conducted the International Jerusalem Philharmonic). As the acustics were superb and it was a great live performance, we had an experience we wont forget.
My conclusion: I need to hear the individual instruments in the orchestra in order to enjoy more complex classical. But for this I need good equipment. (or a live performance).
