Sir George was trying to get out of his contract with the Chicago Symphony, and decided one night that he simply couldn't take it any longer. As the orchestra was pretending to tune up, Sir George pulled out a pistol and shot the concertmaster, in front of thousands. The trial went swiftly, and Solti was given the death penalty. They sent him to the electric chair, strapped him in, and pulled the switch. All the while, Sir George just sat in the chair and smiled. They increased the voltage, until half the city of Chicago suffered a blackout. Still, Solti just sat in the chair and smiled. Finally, since the sentence couldn't be carried out, the State of Illinois had to let Solti go free.In a later interview, the prison warden was asked why the electric chair didn't work on George Solti. The warden answered, "I guess it's because the man was a terrible conductor".
